 ll Om Namah Shivay ll

Arunachaleshwar temple was built by the Chola dynasty  in 9th century.

Legends say that once Goddess Parvati playfully shut the eyes of Lord Shiva just for a second. And, all light was taken from the universe, and earth was submerged in darkness for years. Parvati performed penance with other devotees of Shiva, and her husband appeared as a column of fire at the top of Annamalai hills, returning light to the world. He then merged with Parvati to form Ardhanarishvara, the half-female, half-male form of Shiva.Annamalai hill is considered sacred and because it represents Lord Shiva Himself in the form of Lingam.

Rituals and Festivals

The temple has six daily rituals from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Various festivals are celebrated in Arunachaleshwara temple like-

    Uthram festival

The Karthigai Deepam festival is held between November and December, and a huge fire is lit atop the hill. It can be seen from miles away and apparently symbolizes the Shiva lingam of fire joining the sky!
